A tender and loving birthday gift to his wife, Cosima (Liszt's daughter), performed on Christmas morning 1870 at Wagner's villa in Lucerne, Switzerland, Siegfried Idyll is an intimate musical love letter written for a small chamber orchestra of 13 - all that could fit on the staircase where the work was first performed. Contrasting beautifully with this quiet, gentle work is the majestic glory of Bruckners Symphony No. 7. The Lake Michigan Youth Orchestra joins the SMSO for two of Brahms's most beloved Hungarian Dances.'
